Our Story
Welcome to The Recess Inn, a cozy and historic bed and breakfast in the heart of Ethel, Missouri. The building has quite a story—it started out as a schoolhouse, built back in 1909, and welcomed its first students on January 31, 1910. For many years, it was a central part of this small rural community, teaching grade and high school students until 1968. Population decline forced a new arrangement with the school in New Cambria, and for the next 12 years, Ethel hosted the grade school students, while high schoolers went to New Cambria. But eventually, on December 23, 1980, all students went to New Cambria and the school closed its doors for good.
Thankfully, the building didn’t stay empty for long. The Gordon family stepped in to save it from demolition, and with vision from their California cousins, Ralph and Sandy Clark, the old school was lovingly and painstakingly transformed into an inn. The whole town pitched in to help with the renovations in 1992, and Sandy filled the place with carefully chosen, period-style décor. It wasn’t just a place to stay; the Recess Inn quickly became a gathering spot for the community, hosting teas and special events. Former students even returned to spend the night in their old classrooms! Nancy Gordon Morford, known for her warm hospitality and "grandma's style" breakfasts, eventually became the beloved innkeeper, and the inn played a big role in reviving local businesses in Ethel.
Fast forward nearly 30 years to the pandemic, and like many places, the Inn slowed down. It stayed open for guests through word of mouth, but it was listed for sale, and the future seemed uncertain as Ethel’s other businesses were also closed by this time. Still, the people of this little town didn’t lose hope. They’ve always been resourceful, working together to support each other and their community. Ethel is a special place. You'll feel that when you're here.
Then, in September 2024, Samantha and Michael Bray, from Parkville, MO, bought the Inn. Samantha has a special connection to this place—she grew up in Ethel, and her grandparents and father went to the school. She works in community-based tourism, so taking on the Inn feels like a calling. With deep roots in the area, our team is excited to welcome guests and share stories about this tranquil village in the hills. We’re so glad you’re here to help us write the next chapter of Ethel's story!

Stewardship
We are committed to caring for our community and the planet. At the Recess Inn, every decision is made with purpose. We thrive on partnerships and lifting up individuals and companies who are doing good. We recognize we live on a planet with finite resources and do our best to make thoughtful choices. We research, acknowledge, and honor history and seek to tell the stories of (all) those who came before us. We are always learning and working to improve. Please let us know if you have information or ideas to share with us! Learn more below about our activities.
We prioritize buying local and patronizing companies that share our ethos of care for the planet and people. While purchasing out in the world, we seek companies that pay living wages, treat employees well, and are environmentally friendly. We love buying from certified B-Corporations or Fair Trade companies whenever possible. We seek products made of natural and organic materials that minimize waste. We decorate and furnish the Inn with previously-loved items that fit with the nostalgic feel.
We provide a platform for local makers. Check out our merchandise stand while staying with us to bring home a souvenir that directly supports our local economy and helps our community carry on creative traditions and innovations. Our online shop will be up and running soon, so you'll be able to support your favorite entrepreneurs from afar!
We strive to minimize waste. You'll find reusable products throughout the Inn, such as refillable shampoo, conditioner, and lotion bottles, travel coffee cups for your use while staying with us, and real plates, glasses, etc. We recycle through the Macon Sheltered Workshop, and please help us by using the bin in your room! We strive to minimize food waste with intentional preparation and go shopping specifically for your visit.
Support for our community is one of our highest priorities at the Recess Inn. $5 of each room night goes towards a historic preservation or community betterment project. You may have noticed we live in the country - building a Little Free Library in our yard for usage by Ethelites and guests is our first project. We also aspire to create a Santa Fe History Museum in one of our third floor rooms. We will seek local input and partnerships for off-property projects. If you would like to contribute to this work, please let us know.
