Lester Dent was a pulp fiction writer born in La Plata, where he attended primary and middle school. After graduating from college in Chillicothe, he became a telegrapher. A colleague had a story published in a magazine, and, as an excellent writer, Dent was encouraged. He went on to create one of America’s first superheroes – Doc Savage. The Man of Bronze is the first novel in the series. Dent wrote 179 Doc Savage novels, credited to Kenneth Roberts. He also wrote in various other genres. His house in La Plata is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
