Purpose

After Recess Book Club is a community of readers who value lifelong learning, thoughtful conversation, and a deeper understanding of place, history, and lived experience. We gather not to rush through books, but to slow down, reflect, and learn together.

What to Expect

This book club emphasizes:

  • Curious, respectful discussion rather than debate

  • Reflection on history, culture, and community

  • Openness to multiple perspectives

  • A welcoming, intergenerational atmosphere

Participants are encouraged to read at their own pace and engage in ways that feel comfortable—listening is just as valued as speaking.

Community Norms

By joining, members agree to:

  • Treat one another with kindness, respect, and good faith

  • Listen actively and allow space for different viewpoints

  • Speak from personal experience rather than generalizations

  • Avoid personal attacks, dismissive language, or assumptions about others’ intentions

  • Accept that not all books—or conversations—will resonate equally with everyone

Discussion Approach

Books may explore complex, uncomfortable, or emotionally charged topics. We approach these with care, humility, and curiosity, recognizing that learning often happens at the edges of our comfort zones.

After Recess Book Club is lightly facilitated to help maintain a respectful, welcoming online environment.

Facilitators may:

  • Gently guide conversation to ensure balanced participation

  • Remind the group of shared norms when discussions become heated or unclear

  • Pause or redirect discussion to support understanding and care

  • Follow up privately if concerns arise

Our goal is not to police conversation, but to support thoughtful dialogue and shared learning. In rare cases, facilitators may limit participation or remove a member from an online session if behavior consistently undermines the group’s values or sense of safety.

Shared Responsibility

After Recess Book Club is a shared space. Members help uphold its tone by modeling generosity, patience, and openness, and by supporting a culture where everyone feels welcome to participate.

What This Is—and Isn’t

  • ✔ A space for thoughtful, place-based conversation

  • ✔ A slower, reflective alternative to debate-driven book clubs

  • ✘ Not a forum for winning arguments or persuading others

  • ✘ Not a space for disrespectful or disruptive behavior

By joining After Recess Book Club, you are choosing a community grounded in curiosity, care, and connection.
